People often ask me how I got
into skin
care. It actually started many, many years ago. As a teenager I had
absolutely horrible skin. Not just acne, but stop-in-the-hall and gawk
horrible acne. I went to a dermatologist weekly where I had a Vitamin B
complex injection, had my face burned weekly with a sun lamp and took
two doses of tetracycline a day. I also had to wash each morning with a
really aggresive, gritty cleanser Pernox, and had to apply a thick,
chalky mixture to my face and let it dry on each evening. I remember
the tast of it to this day. It got into my hair, my mouth, my pillow,
my sheets. It was horrible. This was the only thing available at the
time, and in fact the dermatologist had to make this
stuff in his office. I started in beauty school just a few short years later. Back when I attended beauty school we were trainined in everything, skin care, hair, nails, etc. I had no idea that years later I would have my own beauty/esthetics school, and especially in Alaska. But here I am. Both Sue (my wife) and I enjoy helping people with their skin care issues, their hair style desires, and especially helping people out in their careers in the beauty industry in general. The changes the skin care industry has gone through in the past few years is nothing short of amazing! We have changed our esthetics program four times already and we're preparing to change it for the fifth time now. The equipment keeps changing, new equipment is added, on nearly a monthly basis, new uses for our already existing equipment is discovered, new products are created, and new science is discovered all the time. Now, for wrinkles we can offer ultrasonic microdermabrasion, diamond microdermabrasion, moisturizing treatments, physical membrane occlusion facials, radio frequency treatments... For slack skin we offer microcurrent, massage, firming products, radio frequency treatments, photorejuvenation... For rough skin and keratin bumps we offer light smoothing radial resurfacing, ultrasonic microdermabrasion... For dark circles and pigment discoloration we offer photorejuvenation, herbal compresses, treatment serums... For cellulite we offer vibration massage treatments, ultrasonic treatments, microcurrent treatments, firming products... For acne we offer a monthly protocol, professional recommendations, blue light / red light treatments, hot stone / cold stone treatments, microcurrent, anti-acne products... Things sure have changed since I was suffering from acne breakouts as a teenager. If you'd like to schedule an appointment, you can call us at (907) 276-4110 or you can book your appointment online here. Things to Consider... As a student at any esthetics school, esthetician school, beauty school, cosmetology school, or skin care school, these are some things you'll want to consider. What kind of training do your instructors have? Do they have the minimum level of local training only? Do they travel frequently to keep up with new products and new technologies? Isn't this what YOU want to learn? How will they teach you if they don't even know? What kind of equipment will you be using? They don't have any? Don't just take their word for it... SEE the equipment you'll be training on. Do they only have limited machines or just one machine? Do they know how to turn it on? How will you compete with others in the industry that have the newest and most modern machines and products? What kind of equipment will you keep as part of your student kit? We are the only school in Alaska that provides you with a professional esthetics machine as part of your student kit. Ask to see theirs... What kind of products will you be using? Do they have any products? Sigel has been formulating hair care and skin care products since 1980. Have a question regarding skin care products? Call all the schools and ask them the same questions. MetrOasis® is the ONE with the answers! Will you learn ANY of the technologies listed above? Ask the instructors at the other schools to explain them to you. Can't can they? We know. 15 Things to consider when looking for a beauty school in Anchorage, Alaska! 1. Where will you work after you graduate? Call some of the salons/spas you're interested in and ask them which beauty school they'd recommend. Then ask them which beauty schools you SHOULDN'T go to! If you're going to work at a budget salon & do bubble cuts all day, it doesn't really matter. But if you want to work in a top end salon, ask them. 2. Is the beauty school you're looking at financially sound? Can they afford products/equipment, is their credit good enough to take credit cards? If they train you, will YOU have good credit? It's simple... call them up and say - "Do you take credit cards?" 3. Who are the instructors? What kind of training do they have? Are they nice? If the person you're interviewing with is a butthead, how will they be as your instructor? Hmmmmmmm? Ask them where they've trained. Ask them what type of beauty industry jobs they've had. Where? When? Which salons have they worked in? Have they ever had any training outside of Anchorage? Outside of Alaska? Outside of the United States? 4. Do the instructors receive new training each year or are they simply repeating what they learned years and years ago? True professional are always learning, always improving their skills. This is true of salon and spa professionals too. Their last class was... I know... they've been doing this 60 years! Have they had any national level training? International level training? Have they ever taught salon classes or been a platform artist themselves? If your instructor hasn't accomplished very much how do you expect them to teach YOU how to accomplish great things? 5. What are the reviews like at the Anchorage, Alaska beauty school you're considering? Harvard Business School says that 35 people leave a business for each one that complains. 10 bad reviews equals 350 unhappy clients/students. Does the beauty school you're looking at have good reviews, bad reviews, mixed reviews? Take them seriously. 6. Are you allowed to speak with the students enrolled at the Anchorage, Alaska beauty school you're looking at? Why not? Quality beauty schools are an open book. Ask current students how they like their programs. If you can't... RUN! FAST! 7. What does the Anchorage, Alaska beauty school you're interested in look like? A Factory? End up in a factory beauty school & you're just a part of the furniture! Are YOU here for THEM or are THEY here for YOU? 8. Make an appointment for a service at the Anchorage, Alaska beauty school you're looking at. If that school doesn't understand customer service now, how will they teach it YOU? Like I said... RUN! 9. What is the placement rate of the Anchorage, Alaska beauty school you're looking at? ALL beauty schools are required by the state to keep these stats and it's your right to know! This shouldn't be something they're hiding. Here are the placement rates for the MetrOasis Advanced Training Center. (2008 hairdresser=100%, esthetician=76%) (2009 hairdresser=100%, esthetician=88%) (2010 hairdresser=100%, esthetician=95%) (2011 working...) 10. What is the reputation of the Anchorage, Alaska beauty school you're considering? Is it a party school? Do the students look like hookers? You need professional vocational training? Does the salon that hires you want that look? 11. Are there any hidden costs associated with attending this Anchorage, Alaska beauty school? Do you have to sell a shelf of products to graduate? Do you have to pay extra for the products you use? That's called "bait & switch!" 12. Does this Anchorage, Alaska beauty school offer any post-graduate support? Does this beauty school promote their graduates with job referrals or website listings? A GREAT beauty school helps you AFTER you graduate as well. 13. What kind of web presence does this Anchorage, Alaska beauty school have? What's this beauty schools website like? Is the website informative or does their website look like they couldn't be bothered by new technology? Is this website specifically vague enough that it seems that they're trying to get you in for a high pressure sales situation? 14. How does the person answering the phone sound when you call different beauty schools in Anchorage, Alaska? Are they helpful? Mean? Friendly? Disinterested? You're still in the "dating period". How will they treat you AFTER they have your money? 15. Does this Anchorage, Alaska beauty school offer any advanced training or do they just offer the basics? If you learn only the "basics" how will you compete with experienced people already in the beauty industry? ADVANCED TRAINING CENTER? Have you looked at ALL of the beauty schools in Anchorage, Alaska? If you ask get the answers to these questions you're probably on the way to choosing a great school.
